What you're going to hear, won't be the punch-line you imagined, but a completely different one, which will make you laugh. How did you feel after hearing the setup? I am sure you have thought that the car is being driven by one of the three people. It's really natural to think that way, and our brain is to blame. And as I already said, the punch-line you read was indeed very different. This is important as it's in fact the basic principle of humor.
You should create the best possible setup, as it's really important. A good comedian needs a good setup which delivers only the basic facts (so that there are many possible ways of thinking), so that the audience would have to think hard and be convinced that their way of thinking is the right one. Now, the more you believe your punch-line is the best one, the more you'll laugh when you hear the real one. But if you're already familiar with the punch-line the joke won't be funny anymore as the brain won't be making any new routes.
This should prove useful in case you want to make up some new funny jokes. When a girl tells something that all the folk thinks about in the same way, but you find out an unexpected way to understand it. Now, if you tell this to others, it should be incredibly funny.
