It can be either a complete musical piece or part of a larger musical arrangement. Combination of dance and music is as ancient as music itself is. If we go throw the history of dance music and begin with ancient times, we have ancient Greek dance music where dancers used to accompany musicians. The earliest Western dance music such as Caroles and Estampie are still surviving forms of dance music. The old classical dance music included Sonatas, string quartets and symphonies. With beginning of ballet, dance music reached to new horizons and a romantic touch was included in it. After that many dance forms have been at of dance music such as Rock and Roll in Fifties and Sixties, new wave of dance music in 80’s and after that orchestra and Disco came into existence and compelled the whole generation to move up with high voltage. Discotheques became part of daily life of young souls as they spend their evenings and late night’s with heavy dose of music and dance. Electronic dance music which can be called commercial form of dance music is very popular now days. It is played in nightclubs, radio stations, shows, parties by DJs.

Now dance music has been made electronically by using electronic instruments such as computers, synthesizers, sound cards and drum machines to control one another and achieve the full synchronization of sounds. In modern dance music we rarely see any physical instrument. All these are now replaced by digital or electronic sounds, which have 4/4, beat. Trance, House and Techno dance music type which are most commonly used forms have dance music ranges from minimum 120bpm to maximum of 200bpm.


Unlike conventional music, we can say dance music is not played these days but it is programmed as it has now become totally electronically and digital. The origin of all modern dance music has three main nerve centers- Caribbean (Jamaica), the American Midwest (Detroit and Chicago) and Western Europe. The Caribbean contributed Reggae Dub and rap. American Midwest enriched dance music with Jazz, soul, funk and blues. India, Great Britain, Scandinavia and Japan are other countries that have contributed lot of good things to today’s modern form of dance music.
