You have finally made the choice to get synthetic grass for your home but are unsure what to look for. There is an abundance of products on the market for you to choose from now, all promising this, that or the other. Taking the time to investigate and research all the products around will ensure you achieve the best result for you and your family. As this is a time consuming and lengthy process, knowing what to look for and what questions to ask will not only have you well prepared, it will save you time as well.

There are seven basic factors to consider in choosing the right grass for you.

1. Natural Look, Feel & Colour

The more common options available are a short, evenly cut or a longer, slightly more uneven fibre with a rich green colour. Preferences for appearance and application will vary for each individual; therefore you should look at grass already laid to get a better idea of how it looks in a garden.

2. Stitch Rate

The stitch rate refers to the number of stitches per 10cm along a stitch row on the back of the synthetic grass. The higher the number of stitches, the denser and heavier the product.

3. Stitch Gauge

The stitch gauge refers to the number of stitch rows across a 10cm section of synthetic grass. The closer the rows are together, the denser and heavier the product will be.

4. Tuft Lock

Tuft Lock is a term used to describe and measure the amount of force required to pull a single stitch from the latex backing. The harder it is to pull out indicates a better quality backing.

5. Warranty

Ensure your lawn comes with a manufacturer’s warranty, anywhere between 5-7 years as a general rule. This lets you know the manufacturer is confident with their product and will stand by what they make and sell. Ask for proof of what they claim, including results on testing and reports on the types of products they produce.

6. Installers Experience

You need to make sure that your installer is experienced so ask them about previous jobs. Go and have a look at the various places where they have laid grass and, if possible, get a couple of references from past clients. If they are unable or unwilling to do this, maybe it’s time to look for someone else.

7. Durability

With children & pets to consider, you want your grass to be strong and durable yet soft enough to walk and play on. Generally the longer the blades, the softer underfoot your grass will be and the more fibre in the product, the longer the lifespan.

Now that you have got your list of questions ready, check out ALL the companies around and choose the best one for you. Ask your family or friends if they have anyone they could recommend and don’t forget, neighbours are also a good source to talk to.

In the end, it all comes down to what suits your lifestyle and budget. Do all your homework, ask lots of questions and consider everything carefully, it is an investment you won’t regret if you choose wisely.
